Elder Update | 9.27.2026
Through much prayer and discernment, Resonate’s elders have unanimously voted to shift our theological position on women in leadership, allowing for the ordination and installation of female elders.
We encourage you to engage with the resources on this page, including our video announcement, an overview of the biblical foundation for the Mutualist position, and responses to frequently asked questions. If you have questions or would value time to pray together, please schedule a time to meet with our elders.
Lecture Nights
Join us for two evenings of teaching where the elders will walk through the biblical case for this shift in depth. Across four topical lectures, we’ll cover our interpretive method, God’s story, challenging texts, and how this impacts our church moving forward.
- When: Sundays, October 18 and November 1, 6 to 8pm
- 10/18: How We Read Scripture & The Story Scripture Reveals To Us
- 11/1: An Examination of the Texts & Questions & Responses
- Childcare: Available both nights
- Dinner: Bring your own
- Questions: We’ll collect your questions along the way and answer them together at the November 1 gathering
Both nights will be recorded, but we encourage anyone to attend in person if you’re able.
Reading Recommendations
If you haven’t studied your own position on this in a systematic way, we invite you to dive into these resources alongside us.
We recommend Dr. Preston Sprinkle’s book From Genesis to Junia as a place to start. Sprinkle is a Bible scholar who comes from a complementarian background, but engaged in an honest study of the whole of the biblical story to discern what the Bible says about women in leadership. He examines both the relevant texts and scholarly sources in an engaging, accessible way for the average Christian. The chapters are arranged in a full overview of the Bible from creation, women leaders in the Old Testament and early church, to each of the passages from Paul that seem to restrict women’s leadership.
Among his book, we also recommend the following authors.
- Neither Complementarian Nor Egalitarian
by Michelle Lee-Barnewall - Two Views on Women in Ministry
edited by James R. Beck - The Bible vs. Biblical Womanhood
by Philip Payne
- Rediscovering Scripture’s Vision for Women
by Lucy Peppiatt - Eldership and the Mission of God
by J. R. Briggs and Bob Hyatt (see chapter 11, “What about Women Elders?”)
Questions?
We know a change like this can bring up a lot of questions, and we want to hear them. Whether you’re wrestling with a passage of Scripture, wondering what this means for you, or just want to share where you’ve landed, we’d love to hear from you. Your email goes directly to Resonate’s leadership team, the group who has prayed through this shift and wants to walk through it with you.
